About the Fabric: Design 9297 (1913) is the work of Josef Hoffmann (Austrian architect and designer), a founding member of Wiener Werkstätte. This group of visual artists believed in the value of exquisite craftsmanship and followed the motto: “Better to work 10 days on one product than to manufacture 10 products in one day.” To put Design 9297 into production, and to do so authentically, Maharam drew upon early-20th-century colors and other examples of Hoffmann’s work. Aside from a change in fabric construction that improves the appearance of the graphic design (the original trial sample from 1913 was created with a tapestry construction, the re-edition is rendered in a satin weave), Design 9297 retains its accurate form, including its original name, which was assigned to it in the mill archive.
